Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo is reportedly facing fresh legal pressure after controversy erupted over allegations linked to internal party finances in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to reports, Okonkwo is being dragged into another ₦5 billion lawsuit following claims he made during a live television interview, where he alleged that aspirants in the NDC were made to pay ₦10 million as part of the party’s ticket process. The allegations were said to implicate senior figures within the party, including its leadership structure in the South-East.

The presidential candidate of the Peter Obi has strongly denied the accusations, describing them as false, defamatory, and damaging to his reputation. Obi’s legal team reportedly issued a pre-action notice demanding a public retraction, apology, and ₦5 billion in damages.

The dispute stems from comments Okonkwo made during an appearance on Channels Television, where he alleged that aspirants submitted payments and that irregularities occurred during the selection of candidates. One aspirant reportedly featured in the controversy later denied making such claims.

Obi’s lawyers argue that the statements were not only untrue but also capable of portraying him as being involved in bribery, fraud, and manipulation of party processes. They insist that the claims were widely circulated on television and social media, increasing reputational damage.

Okonkwo, however, has pushed back, maintaining that his statements were based on information he received and insisting he stands by his position, while also questioning the legal threat.

The situation has intensified political tension within opposition circles ahead of the 2027 general elections, with both sides exchanging strong accusations and preparing for possible court action.

The case adds to growing internal disputes within the NDC as party figures clash over allegations of corruption, ticket sales, and candidate selection processes.
