The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement was made on Monday and confirmed by party officials and spokesmen of the Kwankwasiyya movement. According to the NDC, the decision followed consultations with party stakeholders and was aimed at strengthening the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 polls.
Mustapha Kwankwaso is the son of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, one of the most influential political figures in Kano and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement. His emergence is expected to deepen the movement’s influence within the NDC and attract support from its grassroots base across the state.
Before his nomination, Mustapha served as Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports. Both he and Gwarzo were members of the Kano State government before exiting amid the political rift involving Kwankwaso and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
A spokesperson for Gwarzo said the choice reflects the party’s commitment to unity, inclusiveness, and effective representation. The NDC believes the ticket will strengthen its position as preparations intensify for the 2027 governorship election in Kano State.
