The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expanded and published the final list of candidates cleared to contest the June 20, 2026, Nasarawa North Senatorial District bye-election, increasing political activity ahead of the poll.
According to the electoral body, four candidates from four political parties have been cleared for the election, which is being held to fill the vacancy created by the death of former senator Godiya Akwashiki.
The approved candidates are:
- Halilu Danladi Envwulu-Aza — All Progressives Congress (APC)
- Labaran Maku — Labour Party (LP)
- John Paul Araneshri — New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)
- Emmanuel David Ombugadu — Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
The election will take place across Akwanga, Wamba, and Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Areas, with more than 338,000 registered voters expected to participate. INEC said all necessary preparations, including the deployment of election materials, training of personnel, and configuration of BVAS machines, have been completed.
Earlier controversies arose after some political parties, including ADC and NDC, were reportedly absent from an earlier list of cleared candidates. However, INEC maintained that only parties that successfully completed the nomination process in line with the Electoral Act would participate in the bye-election.
The Nasarawa North bye-election is one of several by-elections scheduled by INEC across Nigeria on June 20, alongside polls in Enugu, Rivers, Ondo, Kano, and Kebbi states.
