Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he understands the pain of ethnic stereotyping, noting that as an Igbo man he has personally experienced similar discrimination in Nigeria.

Obi made the comment while addressing concerns about rising ethnic profiling and generalisation against the Fulani community, where some individuals are often wrongly linked with insecurity and criminal activities.

He said it was unfair to judge an entire ethnic group based on the actions of a few individuals, stressing that such stereotypes deepen division and weaken national unity.

Obi explained that his own experiences as an Igbo man exposed him to similar prejudice, which is why he strongly empathises with any group facing collective blame or discrimination.

He further urged Nigerians to resist narratives that promote ethnic hatred, warning that insecurity and national problems cannot be solved through division or blame games, but through fairness, dialogue, and inclusive governance.

The former governor has consistently spoken against ethnic profiling in Nigeria, calling for unity and for citizens to be judged as individuals rather than through ethnic identity.
