Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day across the state to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448 AH.

The declaration was announced in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the state government recognizes the significance of the Hijrah to Muslim faithful. The statement explained that the Hijrah commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, a landmark event in Islamic history.

Makinde congratulated Muslims in Oyo State and beyond on the commencement of the new Islamic calendar year and urged them to reflect on the lessons of sacrifice, faith, perseverance, and devotion associated with the Hijrah.

The governor also called on residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria, stressing the need for solidarity, brotherhood, and peaceful coexistence among citizens.

According to the government, public offices and institutions in the state are expected to observe the work-free day, while essential services will continue to operate.
