Gunmen have killed a traditional ruler in Plateau State after ambushing his vehicle along a major road in what authorities have described as a targeted attack.

The victim, Da John Putmang Hirse, was reportedly attacked while travelling along the Bokkos–Manguna road on Wednesday. The assailants opened fire on his vehicle, killing the monarch and leaving other occupants injured.

Sources said the attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting, while security personnel and local residents later responded to the incident. The injured victims were taken for medical treatment as authorities launched an investigation into the attack.

The killing has triggered outrage in Bokkos Local Government Area, with community leaders and residents calling for urgent action to tackle recurring insecurity in the area. Plateau State has witnessed a series of violent attacks in recent years, particularly in rural communities.

State authorities and security agencies have condemned the attack and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. Security operations have reportedly been intensified in the area to track down the perpetrators.
