Talay Riley, the Grammy-winning Nigerian-British singer and songwriter whose real name was Mark Yinka Orabiyi, has died at the age of 35 after a stabbing incident in East London. Police have launched a murder investigation into the case.
According to reports, emergency services were called to Pankhurst Avenue, Silvertown, on the morning of June 5 after receiving reports of a stabbing. Riley was found with multiple stab wounds in the garden of a property on Rayleigh Road. Despite efforts by paramedics to save him, he died at the scene. A second man in his 20s was also hospitalized with stab wounds but is expected to survive.
The Metropolitan Police said three people were arrested in connection with the incident. A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were later released without further action, while a 27-year-old man was released on bail pending further inquiries. Detectives from the Specialist Crime Command are continuing their investigation.
Riley was widely respected in the music industry for both his own recordings and his songwriting work. Over the years, he collaborated with artists including Dua Lipa, Usher, Britney Spears, Craig David, Khalid and H.E.R.. He contributed to major hits such as Young Dumb & Broke and worked on music that earned Grammy recognition.
Tributes have poured in from across the music world. Riley’s brother, songwriter Scribz Riley, described him as a mentor, inspiration, and light in many people’s lives. Fellow artists including Stormzy, Craig David, Kehlani, and Khalid have also paid tribute to the late musician.
Police are appealing for witnesses and any CCTV or video footage that may help establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
