A U.S. citizen who was treated for Ebola at a hospital in Berlin, Germany, has been discharged after recovering from the disease, according to hospital authorities.
The patient, identified as Dr. Peter Stafford, a medical missionary, was flown from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Germany in May 2026 after contracting a rare strain of the Ebola virus while treating patients. He was placed in a high-security isolation unit at Berlin’s Charité Hospital.
- Stafford tested positive for a rare Ebola strain (Bundibugyo virus) after exposure in Congo
- He received intensive treatment in a specialised isolation ward in Berlin
- Doctors confirmed that viral tests later returned negative, indicating recovery
Medical officials confirmed that:
- The virus was no longer detectable in his system
- Isolation orders were lifted after sustained negative tests
- He is now well enough to leave hospital care
His wife and four children, who were also flown to Germany as high-risk contacts, had tested negative and remained under observation but did not develop symptoms.
