Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has condemned the reported attack on human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and other protesters during Democracy Day demonstrations, describing the incident as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic values.

Hashim, who is the Accord Party’s former presidential candidate and Co-Chairman of the Movement for Democratic Renewal (MDR), said the right to peaceful protest, free expression, and civic participation are fundamental pillars of democracy. He argued that Democracy Day should not only celebrate Nigeria’s return to civilian rule but also reinforce commitments to constitutional rights, justice, and the rule of law.

According to Hashim, democracy grows stronger when citizens are free to organize, express their views, and hold leaders accountable. He warned that attempts to suppress dissent could weaken democratic institutions and undermine public confidence in governance.

The politician also expressed concern over what he described as the continued harassment of Sowore, including issues surrounding the seizure of his passport, and called for due legal processes to be respected. He stated that the Movement for Democratic Renewal would continue working with civil society groups, labor organizations, and concerned citizens to defend democratic freedoms.

Hashim stressed that Nigeria must avoid any return to an era where opposing government actions is treated as a crime, insisting that protecting democratic rights is a collective responsibility.

The statement came amid reports of confrontations involving protesters during June 12 Democracy Day activities, which commemorate the struggle for democratic rule in Nigeria.
