Students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic have raised fresh concerns over worsening insecurity in communities surrounding the institution, citing cases of robbery, kidnapping, and violent attacks that have left many students living in fear.
The complaints come after a series of security incidents in student-populated areas around Saapade, Ode-Remo, Isara-Remo, and Ipara-Remo. According to school officials, five students were recently abducted before being rescued by the police, while a student was killed during a suspected armed robbery attack.
Students and community leaders say the persistent attacks have disrupted academic life and created anxiety among residents. Reports indicate that from 2009 to 2026, more than 100 robbery incidents have been recorded in communities linked to the institution, with at least 21 students reportedly losing their lives during that period.
In response to the growing concerns, the polytechnic recently convened a security summit involving the police, civil defence corps, traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and student representatives. The meeting focused on finding solutions to kidnapping, robbery, and other security threats affecting students.
Speaking at the summit, the Rector, Dr. Sanni Kehinde Oseni, described insecurity in the institution’s host communities as an urgent issue requiring collective action. Community leaders also called for increased security patrols, improved street lighting, surveillance systems, and stricter monitoring of off-campus accommodation.
The concerns are not new. In 2021, the institution temporarily shut down and directed students to leave campus because of worsening security conditions around student residences, underscoring the long-standing nature of the problem.
Students are now urging the Ogun State Government and security agencies to take stronger measures to ensure their safety and restore confidence in the affected communities.
