The Federal University of Technology Owerri has directed students to proceed on a two-week break to allow for fumigation and renovation of hostels, amid tensions and protests following the death of a student on campus.
According to a circular signed by the university registrar, Chiedozie Uba, students were instructed to vacate hostels and leave for a mid-semester break beginning May 31. Academic activities are scheduled to resume on June 15.
The development comes after the death of Chinedu Chibuzor Christogonus, a 100-level Cyber Security student, whose death sparked widespread outrage among students. Reports indicate he was allegedly assaulted by members of the campus Man O’ War unit over accusations involving ₦13,500.
In response, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) suspended lectures and other academic activities, demanding transparency, accountability, and justice for the deceased student.
The SUG said it had previously raised concerns with university authorities regarding alleged brutality and student safety issues but claimed no decisive action was taken before the incident occurred.
The Imo State Police Command confirmed that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the case. Police spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye said investigations revealed the student allegedly suffered severe assault and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a full investigation, while police have assured the public that anyone found culpable will face prosecution.
The incident has triggered protests across the campus, with students demanding justice and reforms to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
