Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has said that General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, is being wrongly targeted by Nigerians expressing frustration over the country’s economic and security challenges.
In a statement shared on her X account, Ezekwesili explained that the anger directed at public figures, including religious leaders, reflects the deep frustration of Nigerians over years of poor governance, corruption, insecurity, and economic hardship.
She noted that many citizens have lost trust not only in political leaders but also in influential figures they believe should speak more boldly on accountability and national issues.
Ezekwesili, however, maintained that Adeboye has consistently shown restraint, dignity, and concern for national peace, stressing that blaming him for Nigeria’s structural problems is misplaced.
According to her, the real issue is the growing demand from Nigerians for religious leaders to play a stronger role in calling out bad governance, but she warned that such expectations should not turn into personal attacks.
She also emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges are rooted in governance failures rather than religious leadership, urging citizens to focus attention on political accountability instead of “wrong targets.”
