A cholera outbreak has claimed at least five lives in Plateau State, with health authorities confirming 11 cases and reporting 53 suspected infections in affected communities. The outbreak has been recorded in Pushit, Mangu I, and Mangu II communities of Mangu Local Government Area.

Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Baamlong, disclosed that the state government has intensified emergency measures to contain the spread of the disease. According to him, additional Rapid Response Teams have been deployed to the affected areas, while treatment centres and isolation facilities are being expanded.

The government has also activated an Incident Management System to coordinate response efforts and has procured rapid diagnostic test kits, intravenous fluids, and essential medicines to manage cases effectively.

Health officials explained that cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Residents have been urged to drink safe water, wash their hands regularly, avoid open defecation, and maintain proper sanitation practices.

Authorities further advised anyone experiencing symptoms such as severe diarrhoea, vomiting, or dehydration to seek immediate medical attention, warning that prompt treatment is crucial in preventing fatalities.

The outbreak comes amid a broader cholera challenge in Nigeria, with health agencies reporting rising cases in several states and calling for stronger public health interventions to prevent further spread.
