The Federal Government has evacuated 66 more Nigerians from South Africa as part of its ongoing repatriation programme for citizens affected by renewed xenophobic attacks and anti-immigrant tensions in the country.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the evacuees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday night, making them the second batch of Nigerians brought home under the emergency evacuation exercise approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that the latest returnees were successfully repatriated from Johannesburg following renewed attacks and intimidation directed at foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.
The development comes after an earlier evacuation flight brought back about 258–262 Nigerians on June 11. Nigerian authorities have said that more than 1,000 citizens initially registered for voluntary return amid fears over worsening xenophobic violence.
The Federal Government says it will continue to assist affected Nigerians and has reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens abroad through diplomatic engagement and evacuation efforts where necessary
