The Federal Government has approved the payment of a 40% peculiar allowance for federal civil servants following mounting pressure from labour unions and threats of industrial action by workers.

The decision was announced after negotiations between government representatives and labour leaders over welfare concerns, salary structure issues, and the impact of rising living costs on public servants. Labour unions had warned of a nationwide confrontation if the government failed to address long-standing demands.

According to union officials, the approval of the allowance is intended to cushion the effects of inflation and improve the welfare of workers in the federal civil service. The allowance will be paid in addition to existing salary components and other approved benefits.

The leadership of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC) welcomed the development, describing it as a significant victory for workers after years of advocacy and engagement with government authorities.

Labour representatives noted that the approval followed threats of a nationwide showdown and demands for the implementation of agreements reached between workers and the government. They said the move demonstrates the importance of dialogue in resolving industrial disputes.

Government officials expressed hope that the measure would improve morale across the civil service and contribute to greater productivity, while also reaffirming their commitment to addressing other outstanding welfare issues.

The approval comes amid broader discussions about workers’ welfare, the implementation of the national minimum wage, and the economic challenges facing Nigerian households due to inflation and rising costs of living.

As implementation details are finalized, labour unions have urged the government to ensure prompt payment and full compliance across all relevant federal ministries, departments, and agencies.
