Former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ayo Oritsejafor, has expressed concern about Nigeria’s electoral process, reportedly stating that elections in the country often resemble “selections” rather than genuine democratic contests.

Speaking during a public event, Oritsejafor argued that many Nigerians have lost confidence in the electoral system because they believe their votes do not ultimately determine election outcomes. He called for reforms aimed at restoring public trust in the democratic process and ensuring that electoral outcomes reflect the will of voters. Reports indicate that he urged political leaders and institutions to strengthen transparency and accountability in elections.

His remarks come amid ongoing national debates about election credibility, vote buying, result management, and voter participation. In recent months, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has repeatedly insisted that votes count and that technological and legal safeguards are being strengthened to improve election integrity.

The comments have generated discussion among politicians, civil society groups, and voters, with supporters agreeing that electoral reforms remain necessary, while others argue that participation and vigilance by voters are essential to strengthening democracy.
