The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested an aviation security officer and two other suspects over an alleged attempt to smuggle 22.2 kilograms of unprocessed gold worth more than ₦4.4 billion through the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano.

According to the EFCC, the aviation security officer, identified as Ali Baffa, an Aviation Security (AVSEC) Inspector I, allegedly concealed the gold bars inside his trousers in a bid to evade airport screening and facilitate their illegal export.

Investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects:

  • Aushabu Nasidi, who allegedly supplied the gold.
  • Mukhtar Muhammad Dan Zaria, who allegedly handed the gold to Nasidi for onward transfer.

The EFCC said operatives also recovered several foreign currencies from one of the suspects, including Saudi Riyals, Turkish Lira, Kuwaiti Dinars, Philippine Pesos, Australian Dollars, Chinese Renminbi, Algerian Dinars, Hong Kong Dollars, Hungarian Forints, and Sudanese Dinars.

During interrogation, Dan Zaria allegedly admitted that about 40.2 kilograms of gold had been smuggled using the same network between June 1 and June 11, 2026.
