The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice has ordered the Federal Government of Nigeria to pay ₦10 million in damages to journalist Jide Oyekunle over alleged assault and violation of his fundamental human rights during the #EndBadGovernance protests.

The court ruled that Oyekunle’s rights were breached by security operatives during the protests and held the Nigerian government responsible for the actions of its agents.

According to the judgment, the court awarded ₦10 million as general damages, stating that Nigeria failed to protect the journalist from unlawful treatment while he was carrying out his professional duties.

The case is part of a series of human rights-related rulings by the ECOWAS Court against Nigeria, especially involving allegations of unlawful arrest, detention, and excessive use of force by security agencies during protests and public demonstrations.

Human rights advocates have described the ruling as another reminder of the need for stronger protection of journalists and greater accountability for security personnel across the country
