The Department of State Services (DSS) has recorded a significant breakthrough in the fight against banditry following the interception of an arms shipment allegedly destined for a notorious bandit leader operating in northwestern Nigeria.
According to security reports, DSS operatives arrested a suspected arms courier in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State after acting on credible intelligence. The suspect was reportedly transporting a cache of weapons and ammunition from Maigatari in Jigawa State to Funtua in Katsina State for onward delivery to criminal elements linked to bandit operations.
Items recovered during the operation included three AK-47 rifles, four rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) tubes and warheads, as well as two empty magazines. Security sources said preliminary investigations connected the shipment to a suspected bandit kingpin believed to be active in parts of Zamfara State.
Investigators revealed that the suspect allegedly confessed to being contracted to transport the weapons and was promised a payment of ₦450,000 upon successful delivery. Authorities are currently expanding their investigation to uncover other individuals involved in the arms trafficking network and determine the full extent of the operation.
The arrest is being viewed as a major success in ongoing efforts to disrupt the supply chains that sustain banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across Nigeria’s North-West region. Security agencies have repeatedly emphasized that cutting off access to weapons is crucial to weakening criminal groups and restoring peace in affected communities.
In recent months, security operatives have intensified intelligence-driven operations targeting arms couriers and logistics networks that support bandit groups. Experts believe that sustained surveillance and coordinated enforcement actions will be critical in reducing the flow of illegal weapons into conflict-prone areas.
The suspect remains in DSS custody and is expected to face further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law. Meanwhile, security agencies have reassured citizens of their commitment to dismantling criminal networks and enhancing national security.
