There was drama at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday when two separate legal teams appeared in court claiming to represent the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a suit filed by Senator Adolphus Wabara and other party leaders against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The suit seeks to compel INEC to recognize the Wabara-led National Executive Committee (NEC) and other organs of the party amid the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP. The dispute has deepened divisions in the opposition party ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Court proceedings were briefly disrupted when separate lawyers announced appearances on behalf of the PDP, raising questions about who had the authority to represent the party. The development reflected the ongoing internal struggle over control of the party’s structures and decision-making processes.

After hearing submissions from the parties, the court adjourned the matter to allow for further proceedings and clarification regarding legal representation. The judge is expected to address issues relating to party authority and the substantive claims brought against INEC.

The case is being closely watched by political observers because its outcome could have implications for the recognition of PDP leadership structures and the party’s preparations for future elections.
