The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who reportedly died while in captivity after being abducted by bandits. The military described his death as a tragic loss to the nation and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces extended condolences to Abubakar’s family, colleagues, and Nigerians at large. The military noted that the late officer served the country with distinction in several strategic roles, including as spokesman for the Armed Forces, and made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations and military professionalism.

According to the DHQ, public comments about the abduction were deliberately withheld while rescue efforts were ongoing. The military said it deployed all available operational resources in an attempt to secure his safe release before his death.

The Defence Headquarters stated that the incident would not weaken the resolve of the Armed Forces. Instead, it said the loss strengthens its determination to continue operations against terrorists, bandits, and other criminal groups threatening national security.

The military reiterated its commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting citizens, and dismantling terrorist networks across the country. It emphasized that ongoing operations against insurgents and criminal elements would continue with renewed vigor.

Major General Abubakar was widely respected within military circles for his service, leadership, and dedication to national unity. The DHQ said his legacy would remain an inspiration to serving personnel and future generations of military officers.
