Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has condemned the alleged teargassing of Omoyele Sowore and other protesters during Democracy Day demonstrations, describing the incident as a “red flag” for Nigeria’s democratic development.

Speaking on the incident, Adeyanju said it was deeply troubling that citizens exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly were allegedly met with force on a day meant to celebrate civil liberties and democratic struggles. He argued that while security agencies have a responsibility to maintain public order, such duties must be carried out in a manner that respects fundamental rights.

According to him, the reported use of tear gas against peaceful demonstrators on Democracy Day raises concerns about the state’s tolerance for dissent and freedom of expression. He noted that the true strength of a democracy is measured not only by elections but also by how it treats citizens who criticize government policies or hold opposing views.

Adeyanju acknowledged that Nigeria has sustained civilian rule and regular elections for more than two decades but stressed that democracy should also deliver improved security, economic opportunities, accountability, and social welfare for citizens.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the activist expressed concerns about voter apathy, warning that citizens who feel disconnected from governance may become less motivated to participate in the electoral process. He also highlighted the challenge of conducting credible elections in areas affected by insecurity.

Adeyanju further lamented what he described as a shrinking civic space in Nigeria, citing restrictions on protests and the treatment of journalists and activists as issues that deserve attention. He maintained that a healthy democracy depends on citizens being able to speak freely, organize peacefully, and hold public officials accountable without fear of intimidation.
