Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has been remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre by a Federal High Court in Abuja in connection with his ongoing criminal defamation trial.
The court’s action followed an earlier decision by Justice Mohammed Umar to revoke Sowore’s bail and issue a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear for scheduled proceedings in the case. The judge ordered that he be produced before the court and remanded at Kuje pending further proceedings.
Sowore is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) over social media posts in which he allegedly referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal.” Sowore has maintained that his comments were protected by freedom of expression and has denied any wrongdoing.
Earlier this month, the court ruled that Sowore had a case to answer and ordered him to enter his defence after rejecting arguments that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case.
