A Mexican journalist, Luis Ángel López Valdez, was shot dead by gunmen in Poza Rica, Veracruz, in eastern Mexico. López Valdez was the director of a local news outlet and a reporter for Vanguardia de Veracruz, where he specialized in covering crime, police, and security issues.
According to authorities, the journalist was attacked at close range while walking on a street in Poza Rica. No arrests have been announced, but investigators believe the killing may be linked to his journalistic work. Reports indicate he may have been under a state protection mechanism for journalists.
The murder is the second killing of a journalist in Veracruz this year and comes amid growing concern over press freedom and violence against media workers in Mexico. Another journalist, Roxana Guzmán Ramírez, has reportedly been missing since early June in the same state.
Mexico remains one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists outside active war zones. Media watchdogs and rights groups have repeatedly warned about threats, attacks, disappearances, and killings targeting reporters, particularly those covering crime, corruption, and organized criminal groups.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said federal and state authorities are participating in the investigation and pledged that the case would be thoroughly examined.
