World Cup debutants Cape Verde continued their remarkable run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by holding Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw in Group H, remaining unbeaten after two matches.
Cape Verde stunned the South Americans in the 21st minute when Kevin Pina scored a spectacular long-range free-kick — the country’s first-ever goal at a World Cup finals. Uruguay responded before halftime through Maximiliano Araújo and AgustÃn Canobbio, taking a 2-1 lead into the break.
However, Cape Verde refused to back down. Substitute Hélio Varela capitalized on a defensive mistake by Uruguay in the second half to level the score at 2-2 and secure a historic point.
The result follows Cape Verde’s shock 0-0 draw against Spain in their opening game, meaning the African nation has now taken points from two traditional football powers and remains firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stage.
With the draw, both Uruguay and Cape Verde move to two points in Group H, while Spain lead the group with four points ahead of the final round of matches. Cape Verde will face Saudi Arabia next, knowing a positive result could send them into the knockout rounds.
