The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reiterated that customers on Band A electricity feeders are entitled to compensation when electricity distribution companies fail to deliver the required minimum of 20 hours of daily power supply.

Under the Band A tariff structure introduced in 2024, customers are expected to enjoy the highest level of electricity supply in Nigeria’s service-based billing system. If DisCos fail to meet this benchmark, affected customers are eligible for compensation in line with regulatory rules.

NERC explained that compensation may come in different forms, including electricity credits or improved service delivery, and may also trigger feeder downgrades where performance remains poor for a sustained period.

The regulator also maintains that persistent failure by DisCos to meet service expectations—especially below the Band A standard—automatically activates enforcement mechanisms meant to protect consumers under the tariff framework.

Reports show that the commission has already ordered compensation for Band A customers across multiple DisCos and hundreds of streets where the required supply level was not achieved.

NERC said the policy is designed to ensure that electricity tariffs reflect actual service delivery, while also forcing distribution companies to improve infrastructure and reliability across the national grid.
