Eight suspected pastors have been arraigned before the Anambra State High Court in Awka over alleged violations of the state’s Homeland Security Law 2025.
The suspects were arrested in different parts of the state, including Onitsha and Awka, during enforcement operations by the state security outfit known as Agunechemba.
According to the charges, the defendants are accused of:
- Operating as “fake pastors”
- Using religious platforms to mislead members of the public
- In some cases, staging or using actors for fake miracle claims
- Violating provisions of the new Homeland Security Law 2025
The accused persons were brought before the court on Friday, with the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice leading the prosecution.
After hearing the case, the court ordered that the suspects be remanded in custody and adjourned the matter for further hearing and bail consideration.
The Anambra government has recently intensified enforcement of its security law, targeting individuals accused of:
- Fraudulent religious practices
- Native doctors allegedly aiding criminals
- Spiritual scams linked to criminal activities
Officials say the move is aimed at curbing exploitation and criminal networks operating under the guise of religion.
