A 43-year-old commercial bus driver, Joseph Okpe, has reportedly died after he was allegedly assaulted by personnel of the Nigerian Air Force following a minor traffic incident along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.
According to court documents cited in reports, the incident occurred on May 9 when Air Force officers travelling in a Coaster bus allegedly accused Okpe of damaging their vehicle and demanded ₦100,000 as compensation. When he was unable to provide the money, the officers allegedly attacked him, repeatedly striking his face and head.
Witnesses and fellow commercial drivers reportedly intervened to stop the assault and attempted to settle the dispute. However, Okpe’s condition deteriorated after the incident. He was taken to several hospitals before being pronounced dead at a clinic in Mushin later that day.
A medical certificate reportedly listed severe head injury as the primary cause of death, with pulmonary failure recorded as a secondary cause. Okpe is survived by his wife and three children.
The matter was initially reported at the Ilasa Police Division before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, for further investigation.
As of the latest reports, the Lagos State Police Command had yet to provide an official update on the investigation, while the Nigerian Air Force had not publicly responded to the allegations.
