Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s decision to suspend the execution of a Federal High Court judgment that ordered the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties.

The appellate court had earlier granted a stay of execution, temporarily halting the enforcement of the ruling that sought to remove the parties from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) register over alleged failure to meet constitutional electoral performance thresholds.

In his reaction, Atiku described the Appeal Court’s intervention as important for democracy, noting that the judiciary must ensure consistency and avoid decisions that could undermine political competition ahead of future elections. He also pointed out that INEC itself supported the application for a stay of execution, which he said was significant.

He further warned that conflicting court decisions and politically sensitive rulings could damage public confidence in the judiciary, urging respect for constitutional processes and the rule of law.

The case stems from a Federal High Court judgment delivered in Abuja ordering the deregistration of ADC, Action Alliance, Accord Party, Action Peoples Party, and Zenith Labour Party for not meeting legal requirements tied to electoral performance.

ADC has maintained that the judgment is unfair and politically motivated, while confirming it will continue its legal challenge through the courts.
