Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called on the Federal Government to take strong economic action against South African companies operating in Nigeria, including MTN and DStv, following renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Speaking during Senate plenary, Oshiomhole urged authorities to revoke the operating licences of firms like MTN Group and MultiChoice (owners of DStv), arguing that Nigeria must respond decisively to protect its citizens.

He stressed that Nigeria should move beyond sympathy and adopt retaliatory economic measures, saying the country cannot continue to tolerate repeated attacks on its people abroad.

According to him, targeting major South African businesses in Nigeria would put pressure on South Africa to address the violence and ensure the safety of Nigerians.

The call comes amid rising tensions after reports of killings and attacks on Nigerians in cities like Johannesburg and Durban, which have reignited debates over how Nigeria should respond diplomatically or economically.

While Oshiomhole pushed for tough action, the Senate has yet to fully adopt his proposal, with discussions still ongoing on the best response to the situation.
