Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been sworn in for a seventh consecutive term, extending his rule to nearly four decades after winning the country’s disputed January 2026 presidential election.

The 81-year-old leader took the oath of office on Tuesday at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala amid heavy security and military presence across the Ugandan capital.

According to Uganda’s Electoral Commission, Museveni secured more than 70 per cent of votes cast in the January election, with his new term expected to run until 2031.

His main challenger, Bobi Wine, rejected the election results, alleging widespread intimidation, ballot manipulation, and suppression of opposition supporters during the polls.

Museveni first came to power in 1986 after leading a guerrilla movement and is now among Africa’s longest-serving leaders.

The inauguration ceremony also drew attention to Museveni’s son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who oversaw parts of the military parade and is increasingly viewed by analysts as a possible successor.

Opposition groups and international observers have continued to raise concerns about democratic freedoms and political repression in Uganda under Museveni’s long rule, though election officials insist the polls were free and fair.
