Arsenal may have lost the 2026 UEFA Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties, but the Gunners still made history by setting a new competition record.
Following the 1-1 draw after extra time and subsequent 4-3 penalty shootout defeat in Budapest, Arsenal completed the entire Champions League campaign without losing a single match in normal or extra time.
According to reports, Arsenal became the first team in Champions League history to go unbeaten throughout the tournament and still fail to win the trophy.
The result also meant Arsenal collected a record amount of Champions League prize money for a British club, thanks to their unbeaten run and progression to the final.
However, the defeat extended another unwanted record. Arsenal have now played more European Cup/Champions League matches than any other club without ever winning the competition.
The final itself ended 1-1 after extra time. Kai Havertz gave Arsenal an early lead before Ousmane Dembélé equalised from the penalty spot for PSG. The French side then prevailed 4-3 in the shootout to retain the Champions League title.
Despite the heartbreak, Arsenal’s unbeaten European campaign has been widely recognised as one of the most remarkable runs in the competition’s history.
