South African singer Tyla emerged victorious at the 2026 American Music Awards (AMA), beating Nigerian stars Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Rema in the Favourite Afrobeats Artist category.

The award ceremony took place in the United States on Monday night, with Tyla continuing her impressive rise on the global music scene following the international success of her hit songs and debut album.

The Favourite Afrobeats Artist category featured some of Africa’s biggest music stars, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema, and fellow Nigerian singer Tems.

Tyla’s victory further highlights the growing global influence of African music, particularly Afrobeats and Amapiano-inspired sounds, on international award platforms.

The singer gained worldwide attention after the viral success of her breakout hit “Water,” which earned massive streaming numbers and chart success across several countries.

Fans across social media reacted heavily to the result, with many praising Tyla’s achievement while others debated the competitiveness of the category given the dominance of Nigerian artistes in the Afrobeats genre.

Over the past few years, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema, and Tems have all received major international recognition through Grammy nominations, sold-out tours, and collaborations with global artists.

Tyla’s AMA win is expected to further strengthen her international profile as one of Africa’s fastest-rising young music stars.
