A politician identified as Hon. Chibuike Wanjoku has been shot dead by two masked gunmen at his hotel in Rivers State.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Saturday night at the politician’s privately owned hotel located in the Ahoada area of Rivers State. Witnesses said the assailants arrived at the premises wearing masks before opening fire on the victim at close range.
Sources within the community disclosed that the attackers reportedly targeted Wanjoku specifically and fled the scene immediately after carrying out the shooting.
The deceased was said to be a known political figure in the area and was involved in local political activities prior to the attack.
Residents and hotel staff reportedly rushed to the scene after hearing gunshots, but the politician was confirmed dead shortly afterward due to the severity of his injuries.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that investigations have commenced to identify and apprehend the perpetrators behind the killing.
Security operatives were later deployed to the area to restore calm as tension spread within the community following the assassination.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, although authorities say all possible angles, including political rivalry and targeted assassination, are being investigated.
The latest killing has further heightened concerns over violent attacks and insecurity in parts of Rivers State ahead of increasing political activities in the country.
