President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Rilwan Lanre Babalola as Special Adviser on Power and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Power Sector Reset and Restoration.

The appointment was announced in a State House statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, as part of efforts to address longstanding challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector.

Babalola, a former Minister of Power, is expected to lead a major reform push aimed at improving electricity supply, strengthening coordination across agencies, and restoring efficiency in the sector.

According to the presidency, the task force will operate under a direct presidential mandate, focusing on:

  • Improving sector performance and discipline
  • Reducing technical and commercial losses
  • Enhancing coordination within the power value chain

The government said the appointment reflects its commitment to a “decisive and results-driven reset” of Nigeria’s power sector, which has faced persistent issues such as poor supply and infrastructure inefficiencies.

In the same move, the presidency also restructured energy advisory roles, redesignating the Office of Special Adviser on Energy to focus specifically on oil and gas, to avoid overlap in responsibilities.
