Several students were reportedly hospitalised after a stampede broke out during a Children’s Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, prompting the state government to launch an investigation into the incident.

The incident occurred during the 2026 Children’s Day event attended by large numbers of pupils, students, teachers, and parents from different parts of the state.

According to reports, confusion erupted when sections of the crowd surged toward a particular area of the stadium, leading to pushing, overcrowding, and panic among participants.

Emergency responders and medical personnel at the venue reportedly rushed affected students to nearby hospitals for treatment after several children sustained injuries and breathing difficulties during the chaos.

The Edo State Government confirmed that an inquiry had been initiated to determine the circumstances that led to the stampede and identify any lapses in crowd-control measures.

State officials said they were monitoring the condition of the affected students and assured parents that necessary medical support was being provided.

Authorities also pledged to review safety arrangements for future public events involving large gatherings of children and students.

The incident has sparked concern among parents and residents, with many calling for stricter crowd management and emergency planning at school-related events across the state.
