A fire outbreak has destroyed several shops in Kwara State, with early reports suggesting the incident may have been caused by a power surge.

The fire reportedly broke out in the early hours of the day and quickly spread through the affected shops before emergency responders could bring it under control. Eyewitnesses said traders were left helpless as goods worth millions of naira were consumed by the flames.

Officials from the Kwara State Fire Service later confirmed that preliminary investigations point to an electrical power surge as the likely cause, a recurring issue in similar fire incidents across the state. In past cases, fire outbreaks in Ilorin and surrounding areas have also been linked to unstable electricity supply and faulty wiring.

Firefighters eventually contained the blaze to prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings, but not before significant damage had already been recorded. No casualties were reported at the time of filing this report.

Authorities have urged shop owners to prioritize safety measures such as proper wiring, installation of surge protectors, and regular electrical inspections to reduce the risk of future fire outbreaks.

The incident adds to growing concerns about fire disasters in commercial areas of Kwara, many of which are frequently traced to electrical faults and power fluctuations.
