Police authorities in the United States have launched an investigation into the killing of Nigerian athlete and graduate student Oluwabukola Pereira, who was shot dead during a robbery incident in Ohio.
Pereira, a 30-year-old middle-distance runner who specialised in the 800m and 1500m events, was reportedly killed on May 8 at the Arise Auto Center located on North Wayne Avenue in Lockland, Ohio, where she worked.
According to local reports, the incident occurred during a suspected robbery at the business premises. Investigators said Pereira confronted an individual accused of stealing about $1,500 before she was shot during the altercation.
Authorities in Ohio confirmed that detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and gathering evidence to identify and arrest the suspect involved in the shooting.
Pereira was also an MBA student and was reportedly just days away from graduating before the tragic incident occurred.
Friends, colleagues, and members of the Nigerian sporting community have since paid tribute to her, describing her as hardworking, determined, and full of promise. A co-worker at the auto centre reportedly described her as courageous and committed.
The incident has sparked grief among Nigerians both at home and abroad, with many calling for justice and improved security measures.
As of the time of filing this report, no arrest had been officially announced in connection with the killing, while investigations remain ongoing.
