The Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation after a viral video showed a police officer allegedly threatening to kill anyone who records him while carrying out his duties.
The officer, whose identity had not been officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report, was seen in the video angrily confronting bystanders while issuing threats against individuals using their phones to film him.
In the footage circulating on social media, the officer allegedly warned that he could shoot anyone attempting to record him during operations, sparking outrage among Nigerians online.
Reacting to the development, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the matter was being investigated and assured the public that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken if the officer is found guilty of misconduct.
The police spokesperson reiterated that citizens have the right to lawfully record police activities in public spaces provided they do not obstruct officers in the course of their duties.
The incident has reignited public debate over police accountability, abuse of power, and citizens’ rights during law enforcement operations. Many social media users called for stricter disciplinary measures against officers accused of intimidation and threats.
Civil rights advocates also stressed the importance of public recordings in documenting police conduct and promoting transparency within the security sector.
