Peter Obi has officially resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing deep internal challenges within the party.

According to reports, Obi announced his decision to leave the party on May 3, 2026, stating that the political environment within the ADC had become increasingly hostile and unstable.

He explained that his exit was driven by:

  • Internal crises and divisions within the party
  • Alleged external interference
  • A generally “toxic” political climate

Obi also clarified that his resignation was not due to personal conflicts with key party leaders such as David Mark or Atiku Abubakar, but rather concerns about the party’s structure and direction.

The move comes amid broader opposition realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with reports suggesting that Obi and other political figures may be exploring the formation or joining of a new political platform.

His exit is expected to have major implications for opposition politics in Nigeria, especially within coalition efforts to challenge the ruling party in the next election cycle.
