Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed that seven teachers were abducted and one person was killed during the recent armed attack on schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

Makinde disclosed this while addressing journalists on Sunday following a security briefing with heads of security agencies over the incident.

According to the governor, the attackers invaded multiple school communities, leading to the killing of an Islamic Studies teacher, while seven other teachers were taken away by the gunmen. He added that the exact number of abducted pupils is still being verified.

Security agencies, including the police and other tactical units, have since launched rescue operations and reportedly arrested several suspects in connection with the attack.

Makinde warned that the incident reflects a growing security challenge, noting that armed groups displaced from northern Nigeria may be shifting operations southward due to increased military pressure in their former strongholds.

He assured residents that the government is working closely with security agencies to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of the abducted victims.

The attack has sparked renewed concern over the safety of schools in parts of Nigeria, as communities continue to call for stronger protection of educational institutions.
