Gunmen have attacked communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, killing a teacher and a motorcyclist during a coordinated school abduction operation, according to the police.
The attackers, who reportedly rode on motorcycles, stormed schools in the area in the early hours of Friday, creating panic among pupils, teachers, and residents. Security sources confirmed that the assailants carried out simultaneous attacks before fleeing through nearby forest routes.
According to the Oyo State Police Command, the armed men killed a teacher during the raid and also shot a motorcyclist who resisted attempts to seize his bike. The victim reportedly died on the spot.
The police further disclosed that the attackers abducted an unspecified number of pupils, students, and school staff during the operation. The exact figures are still being verified as security agencies continue search-and-rescue efforts.
In a further escalation of violence, the gunmen also set a vehicle ablaze after forcibly taking it from one of the victims. The vehicle was reportedly used to facilitate their escape route into a forested area.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that tactical teams and intelligence units have been deployed to the affected communities to track the kidnappers and rescue the abducted victims. The Commissioner of Police also led an on-the-spot assessment of the area to coordinate operations.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while residents have called for improved security presence in rural communities, especially around school environments that have increasingly become targets of armed groups.
