Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has threatened to lead a protest to the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, if authorities fail to secure the release of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. The threat follows the abduction of dozens of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, an incident that has sparked nationwide outrage and protests by teachers, civil society groups, and students.
In a post on X, Sowore saidAso Rock Villa this week!”
He described the abduction as evidence of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis and accused the government of failing to adequately protect citizens from kidnappers and armed groups.
The kidnapping, which occurred in mid-May, involved attacks on multiple schools in the Oriire area. Reports indicate that more than 40 pupils and several teachers were abducted, while at least one teacher was killed during the crisis.
The incident has triggered demonstrations across Oyo State, with teachers’ groups, civil society organisations, and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) demanding urgent government intervention and the safe return of the victims.
Security agencies say efforts to rescue the abducted pupils and teachers are ongoing, but public pressure on the government has continued to mount as families await news of their loved ones.
