The Nyesom Wike-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied reports that it plans to hold a convention to affirm former President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the faction described the reported convention as false, misleading, and unauthorised, insisting that no such meeting or endorsement process had been approved by any recognised organ of the party.

According to the group, the PDP has already concluded its presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and state assembly primary elections in line with the Electoral Act, INEC guidelines, and the party’s constitution.

The faction also called on former President Jonathan to publicly distance himself from what it described as a “charade,” saying such a move would help protect the integrity of the democratic process and preserve his political reputation.

The denial follows claims by the rival Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the PDP, which announced plans to organise a special convention in Abuja to ratify Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 polls.

While the Wike-aligned camp rejected the move, the Turaki-led faction insisted the ratification exercise would go ahead despite alleged pressure and venue-related controversies.

The disagreement has further exposed deep divisions within the PDP, with rival leadership groups continuing to clash over control of the party and preparations for the 2027 general election.

As of the time of reporting, Jonathan had not publicly confirmed or denied the endorsement effort, maintaining silence amid the growing political dispute.
