Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a large cache of military-grade ammunition hidden inside sacks of cassava flakes, popularly known as garri, along the Abuja–Kaduna Highway.

According to the agency, a total of 1,989 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition were discovered during a routine patrol operation on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The bullets were reportedly concealed inside fresh white garri packed in sacks to evade detection.

The NDLEA said a 35-year-old suspect, Abdullahi Hassan, was arrested in connection with the shipment while transporting the consignment along the highway.

Officials disclosed that both the suspect and the recovered ammunition have been handed over to another security agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The interception comes amid intensified nationwide operations by the NDLEA targeting drug trafficking networks and illicit arms movement disguised within commercial goods. Authorities say criminal groups have increasingly adopted sophisticated concealment methods to bypass security checks at checkpoints and courier points.

The agency noted that recent operations across the country have also led to the discovery of drugs, opioids, and other contraband hidden in everyday household items, including food products and export cargo.

Security agencies say investigations are ongoing to uncover the wider network behind the illegal ammunition shipment and prevent further movement of arms through civilian supply chains.
