The Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has strongly condemned the alleged assault, brutalisation, and detention of a University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) doctor by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling for immediate disciplinary action against those involved.
In a statement issued by the association’s Publicity Secretary, MDCAN described the incident as a “dehumanising and barbaric display of power,” insisting that it was unacceptable for law enforcement operations to disrupt healthcare services within a hospital environment.
According to the association, the incident involved Professor Eyo Ekpe and other medical staff who were allegedly assaulted and unlawfully detained during an EFCC operation at the hospital premises in Akwa Ibom State.
MDCAN stressed that hospitals must remain protected spaces dedicated to saving lives and warned that such actions endanger both healthcare workers and patients receiving treatment. It added that it would no longer tolerate harassment or intimidation of its members by security agencies.
The association also confirmed that it is engaging relevant authorities and collaborating with its UUTH chapter to ensure a full investigation into the incident, while demanding justice for affected staff.
This latest reaction follows growing outrage from medical bodies nationwide, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), which has also condemned the alleged raid and called for an official inquiry into the conduct of EFCC operatives.
The EFCC, however, has maintained that its officers were at the hospital to verify a medical report linked to an ongoing fraud investigation, a claim that has further fueled controversy over the operation.
