The Kano State Government has announced plans to conduct medical screening for 3,000 prospective couples ahead of a mass wedding programme in the state.
The exercise, organised through the Kano State Hisbah Board, will involve 1,500 men and 1,500 women, who have been selected to participate in the initiative.
According to officials, the screening is mandatory and will assess the health status of participants before marriage. Tests to be conducted include:
- HIV/AIDS
- Hepatitis
- Genotype compatibility
- Drug screening
Authorities said any couple that fails to undergo the screening will be disqualified from the programme.
The mass wedding is part of a social welfare initiative under Governor Abba Yusuf aimed at supporting less-privileged individuals, including widows, divorcees and unmarried women.
As part of the support package, the government is expected to provide:
- Payment of dowries
- Household items such as beds and mattresses
- ₦100,000 cash for each bride to start a small business
The programme continues a long-standing initiative in Kano designed to reduce financial barriers to marriage and promote social stability in the state.
