Speaking during an interview with media personality Jay On-Air, the actress said the industry often tried to place her in a box at a time when lighter-skinned actresses dominated movie screens.
“It was almost like they wanted to put me in a box,” Ogunmola said. “There was a time when light-skinned people were reigning, and they told me I was very curvy and tried to limit me to ‘side chick’ roles.”
The actress explained that the experience was frustrating and affected the kinds of opportunities she received early in her career. However, she noted that she remained persistent despite the stereotypes and continued pushing herself within the industry.
Ogunmola, who first gained public attention after participating in the Next Movie Star reality show, described her journey in Nollywood as “crazy but consistent,” adding that determination helped her survive difficult moments in the entertainment industry.
Her comments have sparked conversations online about colourism, body stereotyping, and beauty standards within Nollywood. Many social media users praised the actress for speaking openly about the pressures faced by dark-skinned and curvy women in the entertainment industry.
Over the years, debates surrounding representation and typecasting in Nollywood have continued to grow, with several actors and actresses sharing similar experiences about how physical appearance sometimes influences casting decisions.
Despite the early struggles, Ogunmola has gone on to establish herself as one of Nollywood’s notable actresses and filmmakers, earning recognition for her performances in romantic dramas and contemporary Nigerian films.
