Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that he has lived with diabetes for more than 40 years, describing it as a disease that is “not curable” but can be effectively managed through proper care and healthy living.

Obasanjo made the remarks in Abeokuta while speaking at a prostate cancer awareness event. He urged Nigerians to embrace regular medical screening, stressing that early detection of diseases can save lives.

According to him, many illnesses that currently have no cure can still be successfully managed if diagnosed early and treated properly. He cited his own experience with diabetes as an example.

“Most diseases that are not curable are manageable. I was diagnosed with diabetes more than 40 years ago, and I have continued to manage it successfully.”

The former president attributed his longevity and health to regular exercise, healthy eating habits, routine medical check-ups, and adherence to medical advice.

Obasanjo has spoken publicly about his diabetes on several occasions, emphasizing that while the condition has no known cure, patients can live long and active lives if they properly manage it.

He also encouraged older Nigerians to take periodic medical tests seriously, noting that many serious conditions become easier to control when detected early.
