Lagos State has recorded over 978,000 malaria cases in 2025, according to health officials, highlighting the continued burden of the disease despite ongoing control efforts.

The figure represents the number of cases treated across public and private health facilities in the state, reflecting that malaria remains one of the most common illnesses affecting residents.

Health authorities say the high number is linked to factors such as environmental conditions, mosquito breeding sites, and delayed hospital visits, especially during peak rainy seasons.

Despite the large caseload, Lagos has made progress in malaria control over the years, with experts noting a significant reduction in prevalence compared to previous decades due to improved testing, prevention campaigns, and treatment access.

Officials continue to encourage residents to adopt preventive measures such as:

  • Sleeping under insecticide-treated nets
  • Keeping surroundings clean and free of stagnant water
  • Seeking early diagnosis and treatment when symptoms appear

Health authorities also emphasize that many fever cases are sometimes wrongly assumed to be malaria, stressing the importance of proper testing before treatment to avoid misdiagnosis and drug misuse.
